History of Bank of the James Field at Veterans Memorial Park
James Madison University baseball and softball reside in Veterans Memorial Park, located adjacent to Memorial Hall at the intersection of Cantrell Avenue and South High Street. The complex, which opened in March of 2010, holds separate venues for both sports with a seating capacity of 1,200 for baseball and 625 for softball. Both venues feature a top-of-the-line playing surface, comfortable spectator seating, enclosed press boxes with separated broadcast rooms, restrooms, a merchandise area and concessions.

A monument at the entrance to the facility was dedicated on Veterans Day weekend during the fall of 2009 and honors all Harrisonburg and Rockingham County residents who were casualties of war.

Memorial Hall houses offices for both programs as well as locker rooms, team rooms, weight rooms, a sports medicine area, batting cages and additional indoor practice space. The original indoor space was completed in 2009 with additional upgrades in 2016 with a netting system and new turf to allow for an entirely turf surface the size of an entire softball infield or up to eight batting cages. Indoor lighting was upgraded to LED in the summer of 2017. The weight room equipment was swapped in 2022 and the front lobby entrance area also upgraded. The softball locker room was also upgraded in 2022.

Extensive outdoor upgrades were completed after the facility opened. VMP became one of the first softball facilities in the country to adopt Desso artificial turf for all previously grass areas around the Hilltopper dirt infield. New outdoor batting cages were installed in 2014 and purple outfield fence padding was installed in 2015. A Right View Pro video system was also installed to accommodate training and analysis opportunities of student-athlete performance.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, a major construction project will expand permanent facility seating to 1,500. The project also includes expansion of press box space and upgrades in lighting, all to improve hosting capabilities for postseason NCAA competition.
