Tenants at Sea Breeze Apartments in Seaside are demanding action after years of dealing with a severe cockroach infestation.

“The cockroaches come out of the kitchen, the bathroom and from everywhere,” said one resident during the town hall meeting.

Residents have been complaining about the issue for nearly ten years, with at least 44 units submitting formal complaints.

They say the problem is worsening and that their concerns are being ignored.

“I went to the office and they told me that it was my problem because I didn’t clean my home. But I clean my home every day. I work hard all day and come home to clean my home, so my kids have a clean home,” said Sandra Jimenez, a tenant at Sea Breeze Apartments.

Jimenez emphasized that the issue is not due to a lack of cleanliness, as she and other tenants are doing everything they can to get rid of the bugs.

In recent months, the city of Seaside has become involved, urging the property manager to take steps to address the issue.

“Some of what they’re doing right now is they’ve hired a licensed professional to come in and provide extermination services to each of these units,” said Adolfo Gonzalez with the city of Seaside. “Our goal really is to ensure that we can access every single property so that we can provide the right treatment.”

Building Healthy Communities, the organization advocating for the renters, says tenants want aggressive action.

They are calling for the landlord to cover and fumigate the entire complex to eliminate the problem.
