Alabama Athletics announced plans Thursday for a $59 million expansion and renovation to Coleman Coliseum’s Basketball Training & Player Development Facility.

The proposed project would entail a 48,000 square-foot expansion on the southeast corner of Coleman Coliseum with renovations to approximately 19,000 square feet of existing team space. The project, if approved, would give men’s and women’s basketball their own respective practice facilities and weight rooms along with player development areas for both teams that include locker rooms, lounges, film rooms, equipment room, sports medicine spaces and offices.

“The Coleman Coliseum Basketball Training & Player Development Facility Expansion and Renovation will have an incredible impact on our basketball programs,” Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne said. “This facility is where our basketball programs will spend the majority of their time, and the project will address immediate, high-priority needs for both teams by creating an optimal space for practice and development.”

The hype around Alabama basketball is at an all-time high, with the women making three of the past four NCAA Tournaments for the first time since the 90’s and the men making its historic Final Four appearance last April.

“As a program, we spend a majority of our time in the practice gym, the weight room and studying film, so the potential for us to have a new and expanded space for our student-athletes to develop is big for our program,” men’s basketball coach Nate Oats said.

The University’s Physical Properties Committee recommended Stage I and II approval for the project on Thursday, but the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees and President Stuart Bell both still need to sign off on the renovation. The project will also need a significant amount of fundraising to come to fruition.

“The potential for us to move all of our day-to-day operations to Coleman Coliseum with this new training & player development space is a game-changer for our program, and we appreciate the Board of Trustees, Interim Chancellor Trant and President Bell for the consideration,” women’s basketball coach Kristy Curry said. “The vision and belief of Greg Byrne, Dr. Karin Lee and all of our administration continues to be second to none, as is the support of our donors and fans. We are excited to see what’s to come for the future of Alabama Basketball.”
