Designer Peggy Haddad decorates her kitchen island for the holidays with simple details that add up. She has on display some fresh greenery in a vase, but gives it a more festive spin by hanging little baubles from the branches and adding a bow to the front.
Switch Out Your Everyday Items

Another angle of Haddad’s kitchen reveals how she swapped out her everyday dish towels for ones with festive patterns. Paired with the simple garland and the small tabletop Christmas tree, these subtle touches beautifully capture the holiday spirit.

Bring in Natural Greenery

A store-bought garland might be more convenient, but nothing beats the aroma of natural greenery, especially in the kitchen. Designer Nicole Fisher especially likes that it’s a simple way to add some color to her space for the season.
Think About Seasonal Textures

If you want a more subtle holiday theme, decorate your kitchen with certain textures to give a Christmas vibe, like shearling. In this corner of Fisher’s kitchen, she has a small shearling rug on the floor to add warmth to her space in this cold season.

Invest in Festive Dinnerware

Right off the main part of Fisher’s kitchen is her dining room, which she also loves to decorate for the holidays. “I like to add in some festive dishware, like my red striped cornishware for extra pops during the season,” she says. “My breakfast room is set with a tartan tablecloth, fire lit, candles burning. It sets a vibe that is warm, cozy, and inviting.”
Line Up Your Wreaths

Designer Michael Winn of WINN Design + Build has a breakfast room that is at the heart of his family’s daily routine. It’s sun-filled and comfortable and encourages easy conversation. “For the holidays, we kept the styling simple and organic with fresh wreaths along the windows and a centerpiece of winter greens,” he says. “A few homemade treats and heirloom serving pieces add warmth and make the room feel especially inviting this time of year.”

Introduce Subtle Seasonal Touches

In Winn’s kitchen, the matte black range is the natural focal point, as is the custom plaster and oak hood, so the designer focuses his holiday decor around it. A fresh wreath adds charm, and pops of red from the Le Creuset Dutch oven, pomegranates, and winter flowers subtly enforce the Christmas theme. He adds, “The exposed beams, layered lighting, and generous island give the space a cozy, welcoming feel, especially when we’re cooking big meals throughout the season.”
Enhance Your Existing Design

Glenna Stone’s clients didn’t want kitschy Christmas decor in their kitchen. Instead, the designer needed to enhance rather than compete with the existing look, keeping the festive theme refined but welcoming as it worked with the stunning natural light and striking cabinets.
“We kept the palette natural by hanging fresh wreaths with velvet ribbon, a sculptural olive branch arrangement, and bowls of citrus that echo the view outside,” Stone says. “That balance of simplicity and elegance is what makes the space feel so inviting for the season.”

Display Holiday Cards

These adorable mini wreaths over the mesh-enclosed cabinets are playful and sweet. The pink bows make for an unexpected, playful touch. And if you look closely, you’ll notice designer Alison Pickart strung holiday cards into a garland and hung it over the window. Now, if your guests insist on helping you in the kitchen, they’ll be able to see how nice it is that you didn’t toss their card in the trash.
Match Decor to Your Color Scheme

Rachel Barrett incorporated plenty of lush greenery for a festive update to the kitchen, but to keep it feeling cohesive, she opted for ribbons that match the existing color scheme instead of sticking with the go-to red and green. The same is true for every room in the house!

Incorporate Ornaments

They’re not just for the tree: Weave some branches around your platters and scatter a few ornaments that match the wreath ribbon. In this dessert nook, we also love how Barrett stacked the cake stands to alternate the heights of the cakes—it adds visual interest and makes sure they all get equal time in the spotlight.
Gather Seasonal Branches

A display of greenery animates the corner while a bunch of berry branches livens up the island in this kitchen designed by Ryan Turf of CB2. The colorful display brings up the vibrant reds in the runner, too.

If your serving pantry opens up into the kitchen, don’t forget to show it some love with Christmas decorations, too. Designer Jim Dove staggered the wreaths at different heights, playing up the height of this small but bold space.
