A charming quilted skirt

Schoolhouse

Top pick

Beautifully crafted from a thick cotton jacquard, this Scandinavian-inspired reversible tree skirt is wide enough to corral all of Santa’s deliveries.

Whether you have a humble faux tree with but a few baubles or an enormous fir bedecked in ornaments, the folk-inspired Schoolhouse Stillwater Floral Tree Skirt will elevate whatever tree it adorns. It’s made from a richly dyed 100% cotton jacquard in Schoolhouse’s abstract floral Stillwater motif, which you can get in either red/burgundy or blue/orange/yellow. The skirt is reversible (one side featuring the pattern in maroon, red, and white; the other, just red and white), and its 54-inch diameter encompasses a whole family’s worth of gifts. If you want to embrace the Scandinavian-cottage vibe this year, you can get matching stockings and throw pillows. The skirt is labeled dry-clean only, but we plan to launder it cold, as the instructions for the pillows and quilt indicate, to see how it holds up.

A jolly holly pitcher

Zara Home

Top pick

An elevated way to serve water (or perhaps something a bit more festive), this petite sculptural glass pitcher holds about 6 cups and pours easily.

For keeping loved ones hydrated, we love this Zara Home Borosilicate Glass Pitcher. Holding about 6 cups of fluid (it’s heat-safe, so you can even serve mulled wine and microwave it between pours), this adorable little vessel doesn’t get too heavy to lift, and at a little over 5 inches wide and just under 7 inches tall, it doesn’t take up much table space. The glass holly leaf that emerges from its base is securely fastened, though I still hand-washed it gently to reduce the risk of breaking it (dishwashers are a no-no for this one). You can even get matching holly cups if you want to complete the set.

Fanciful firs

MoMA

Top pick

These battery-powered tree figurines offer a colorful glow for your mantel or tablescape.

Ranging in size from 7 to 11 inches tall, the blown-glass Colorful LED Lighted Trees (available in a set of five, in shades of blue and green or multicolor) are plated in a thin layer of metal to add shimmer even when they’re not lit up. As for the lighting, you’ll need a lot of batteries (nine AA and six AAA to power the full set), but you can run them on a timer mode that keeps them lit for six hours at a time. These trees also come in a larger set, ranging from 9 to 16 inches, if you want to make an even bigger statement.

Merry baubles all around

Hawkins New York

Top pick

Colorful little glass baubles join to form this wreath, which is uniquely beautiful (but a bit fragile).

The colorful Hawkins New York Jolly Bauble Wreath uses dozens of glass baubles in a 1960s-inspired color palette to form its cheerful doughnut shape. The first wreath I received for testing arrived with one globe chipped — surprising, considering how securely it was ensconced in both Styrofoam and paper stuffing. But within about an hour of my emailing Hawkins customer service (from my personal account, to avoid special treatment) with a photo of the wonky bauble, they sent out a replacement. The replacement arrived with no problem at all and was easy to hang from the thin white loop discreetly connected to its back. The wreath is available in large (16.5-inch diameter) or small (13-inch diameter).

Teensy trees

Target

Top pick

For Christmas magic on a budget, these glass tree figurines bring some vintage glam to your tablescape.

Target’s ornamental Wondershop Christmas Glass Trees are made from glass trimmed in glitter, beads, or a combination of the two (they come in pink, gold, green, and silver, ranging in height from about 9 to 14 inches). While the MoMA Design Store glass trees we recommend above (which light up) are the more showstopping tree figurines, these add a festive flair at a fraction of the cost.

A cheery table cloth

IKEA

Top pick

This sweet, no-fuss tablecloth adds pop to your party spread, no matter what you’re serving.

Designed by Swedish artist Evelina Kroon, this 100% cotton IKEA Vinterfint Tablecloth draws nostalgic inspiration from her holiday childhood memories while also experimenting with scale and proportion. We love how Kroon’s bold checkered pattern crackles with color and energy, but we especially appreciate that the tablecloth can be thrown in the washer and dryer.

A scent that says Christmas

D.S. & Durga

Top pick

This candle offers all the best scent notes of a Christmas tree without any of the hassle or cleanup. And it comes in a beautiful vessel, too.

This is the fifth year in a row that D.S. & Durga, one of our favorite candlemakers, has released its Portable Xmas Tree scent, and yet again it lives up to the name. A little smoky, a little spicy, it emits the perfect balance of pine, clove, and amber, with a strong enough throw that you can smell it across the room. If you’re all set on Christmas tree scents, D.S. & Durga released another holiday candle this season, Before Common Encens—so named for its attempt to recreate what incense may have smelled like in antiquity. We haven’t fact-checked the history there, but its potent blend of galbanum, myrrh, costus roots, and cassia smell nice in this era, too.

A stylish tree

Four Crate and Barrel Warm Acacia Tannenbaum Christmas Ornament Trees.
Crate & Barrel

Top pick

This acacia-wood-and-steel sculpture can be strung with ornaments or left alone for its own striking statement.

Made from acacia wood limbs stacked on a black iron base, this elegantly simple Crate and Barrel Warm Acacia Tannenbaum Christmas Ornament Tree is available in three sizes: The smallest (17 inches tall) fits comfortably atop a table, the medium-sized option (25 inches tall) begs for placement beside a fireplace, and the largest (4 feet tall) can even sub in as a Christmas tree alternative. You can also group them all together to create a forest scene. Leave the branches bare and revel in its simplicity, or festoon the limbs, which can rotate, in ornaments and shimmer up the base with lights. Assembly and disassembly is easy with its included Allen wrench and a screw—plus, you can store it flat for the rest of the year.

A foldable forest

West Elm

Top pick

They fold down flat for storage but assemble in less than two seconds for a low-maintenance, high-impact design.

Available in several sizes and colors, the West Elm Decorative Paper Tabletop Trees look beautiful arranged on a tabletop or mantel. But our favorite thing about them is how easily they assemble and store. Hidden magnets on both ends of the folded paper snap together in seconds to make the trees three-dimensional standing objects, but then they fold back down flat enough (about half an inch thick) to slide into a filing cabinet. We love the dark green with gilt edges, but for the true minimalist, the trees also come in a very neutral beige assortment and light tonal greens. Are you more of a maximalist? They come in 3-to-7-foot versions as well.

A striking cake stand

A red and white Crow Canyon Splatter Cake Stand.
Crow Canyon

Top pick

Available in red-and-white or blue-and-white splatter (plus three other colors), this enamelware cake stand is festive for the holidays but also cute for year-round use.

Crow Canyon’s Splatter Cake Stand isn’t specifically designed for Christmas, but serving up gingerbread cookies on this red-and-white version (or a batch of sufganiyot dusted in sugar on the brilliant-blue-and-white one) will make your treats feel all the more festive. And you’ll likely get plenty of use out of them the rest of the year, too: These enamelware stands are dishwasher-safe, lightweight, and simply beautiful. Crow Canyon also sells a number of other serving pieces in this pattern, including spoons, salad bowls, and pitchers, among others.

An advent calendar that never gets old

A Williams Sonoma Christmas Wooden Advent Calendar.
Williams Sonoma

Top pick

Made from hand-painted wood, this cheery advent calendar can be reused year after year for a decoration that always reveals new delights.

As fans of advent calendars, we at Wirecutter have a whole guide dedicated to them. But unlike the ones we often recommend, the reusable Williams Sonoma Christmas Wooden Advent Calendar counts as legit decor—and one that you can pull out every Christmas at that. The hand-painted wooden house features 24 small doors to fill with whatever treat you fancy. Wirecutter VP of product Dorothy McGivney has owned hers since 2017 and has changed the fillings every year as her son’s interests have changed from those of a kindergartener to those of a middle schooler. That means the calendar’s 24 doors have, over the years, opened up to everything from standard candy to mini Funko Pops to Lego sets.

Pillow talk

West Elm

Top pick

Soft yet sturdy, this embroidered pillow case instantly spruces up your couch for the season.

Dark, cold December days turn Christmas-cozy with the right throw pillow. The 20-inch-square West Elm Tannenbaum Tree Pillow Cover features soft, fleecy recycled polyester, delicately embroidered with a Christmas tree strewn in joy-sparking bright-red ornaments. It’s machine washable and can be purchased alone or with an insert (down or down-alternative). West Elm also has various other designs in the same collection, like these textural trees and whimsical skiers.
