An overhang at the end of the island can add precious seating space to a kitchen, but it can further benefit from some complementary details.

“If your countertop is hanging out in no man’s land without an end panel or support, a smart upgrade is to add a decorative wooden leg or even a brass bistro post,” says Jess Ebert, owner and creative director of Four Story Interiors. “Both can be added without invasive carpentry work and give you a custom look.”

Ebert notes that Etsy is a great resource to find creative and style-forward options.

Update the Hardware

Budget-friendly and quick, swapping out basic island hardware is a simple yet surprisingly impactful choice.

“Think of it like jewelry for your kitchen: the right pulls or knobs instantly make an island feel more custom and considered,” says Linda Hayslett, interior designer and founder of LH Designs. “Buyers notice these details, even if they can’t quite put their finger on why the kitchen feels elevated.”

For even more elevation, Hayslett suggests opting for matching decor.

“Style the island with a low tray in a coordinating metal finish, a small bowl for veggies or fruits, and one sculptural object to echo the hardware’s tone,” she says.

Repaint the Cabinets

Color drenching isn’t designated just for your walls and ceiling—take the paint all the way to your island.

“If your kitchen island is feeling a little…blah, emotionally and visually, a fresh coat of paint can change everything,” Hayslett says. “Repainting just the island, especially in a deeper or contrasting color, adds instant character without committing to a full kitchen overhaul.”

Hayslett adds that it creates visual separation, depth, and a focal point that people gravitate to.

“Balance the bold color with warm wood stools, light-toned countertops, or neutral accessories so the island feels intentional, not overpowering,” she says.

If your countertop ends with the base of the island, consider including an overhang to create a host’s dream kitchen.

“Don’t just add a traditional overhang of a countertop hanging out in the balance,” says Barbra Scarpulla, designer and project manager at Brattesani Designs. “What really upgrades the look of a kitchen is what we refer to as the ‘wing-look’: island sides come out creating a cove for the stools to tuck under.”

Scarpulla notes that apron molding can be an elegant detail to tack onto overhangs, as well.

Angle Outlet Strips

A kitchen island really stands out when even the most minute details are considered. For example, Scarpulla likes to ensure outlets are properly placed.

We find that an angled outlet strip is more hidden and doesn’t take away from the look of the island as a furniture piece,” she says. “We prefer black to hide it better from view, unless the cabinetry is white—then white hides it better.”

She notes that outlets should always be installed at the top of the side of an island—”directly under a countertop overhang, and a countertop overhang has to be taken into account for the template to ensure it covers the angle strip,” Scarpulla says.

Replacing an entire countertop can be a time-consuming ordeal—and can dent your wallet. Luckily, subtle changes still go a long way.

“Adding a waterfall edge or upgrading the island’s stone detail alone can make the kitchen feel instantly more high-end,” says Haysleyy. “It’s one of those upgrades that whispers custom without screaming renovation budget.”

According to Hayslett, these features are synonymous with luxury kitchens, boosting the home’s valueeven when the footprint stays the same.

“Lean into clean styling, meaning a single oversized cutting board, a ceramic bowl, or a small vase with greenery can help keep the focus on the stone,” she adds.
