The Very British Edit #5: Setting the Table for Thanksgiving

The Opening Note

After more than a decade exploring the world of interiors at Homes & Gardens, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the way our homes evolve with the seasons. And of all those shifts, this moment – when autumn leans into winter – is my favorite. The light softens, the evenings stretch out, and there’s a wonderful feeling of drawing in, of reconnecting. It’s a time of year that seems made for warmth, for welcoming people in, and for gathering around a table.

For this issue of The Very British Edit, I’m turning my attention to a celebration that has quietly become one of the most meaningful rituals of my year: setting the Thanksgiving table. I’m not American, though I lived in the US fifteen years ago. That time left a deep imprint on me – the warmth, the generosity, and the effortless sense of togetherness that surrounds Thanksgiving stayed with me long after I returned home. My partner was raised in the States, so the holiday naturally became part of our life together, woven gently into our own traditions. Even now, thousands of miles away, we mark it every year. What began as his celebration has become one of my most cherished seasonal rituals.
