While many hopped on the trend for the first time, I’d always known that butter yellow was one worth embracing, all thanks to good old Martha Stewart.

Martha has gone heavy on the butter yellow in her Bedford kitchen, but it works. The island, built-in display cabinets and antique armoire space are all painted in the uplifting pastel shade, yet they don’t overwhelm the space; in fact, they frame it.
Black countertops in a yellow kitchen could sound incongruous, but I’m convinced that the space wouldn’t be the space without them. Other popular countertop materials, such as white marble, would make the space feel too pale, lacking in depth to contrast with the mass of yellow.
While black and yellow are a striking pairing that edges on the unusual side, Martha’s Bedford kitchen has not only encouraged me to introduce more uplifting shades into my cooking space, but to be daring with color combinations. Sometimes the most unlikely duos can work side by side when they’re balanced.
